Kerala’s health authorities have gone on high alert after a 43-year-old man from Feroke in Kozhikode district tested positive for Nipah virus in a preliminary screening. The patient was initially admitted to a private hospital and later shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, where he is currently receiving intensive treatment and is reported to be on ventilator support.
Following the preliminary positive result, the Health Department immediately launched extensive contact tracing, surveillance, and isolation measures to prevent any possible spread of the virus. Officials have begun identifying and monitoring individuals who may have come into contact with the patient in recent days.
Authorities have sent the patient’s samples to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for confirmatory testing. Final results are expected shortly. Until confirmation is received, health officials are treating the case with maximum caution and have activated standard Nipah containment protocols.
According to reports, the patient may have been exposed to conditions associated with potential Nipah transmission while working at a storage facility reportedly frequented by birds and bats. Investigators are examining possible sources of infection and mapping the patient’s recent movements.
The Kerala Health Department has instructed hospitals across the state to strengthen infection-control measures and remain alert for patients presenting symptoms such as fever, headache, respiratory illness, confusion, or neurological complications.
Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease that can spread from animals to humans and, in some cases, between humans through close contact. The virus is known for causing severe respiratory illness and encephalitis and has been responsible for several outbreaks in Kerala over the past decade.
Health officials have urged the public not to panic but to remain vigilant. People are advised to maintain good hygiene, avoid consuming fruits that may have been partially eaten by animals, and seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms consistent with Nipah infection.
The coming days are expected to be critical as authorities await confirmation from NIV Pune and continue efforts to contain any potential transmission. Kerala’s public health system has previously responded effectively to Nipah outbreaks, and officials say all necessary precautions are currently in place.
