Chennai is set to make cricket history by hosting the first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) match outside Australia. Cricket Australia has confirmed that the opening match of the 2026–27 BBL season will be played at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) on December 12, 2026, marking a major milestone in the league’s international expansion.

The historic fixture will feature the defending champions Perth Scorchers against the Melbourne Renegades. The match was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia as part of broader India–Australia sports cooperation initiatives. Organisers believe the event will strengthen cricketing ties between the two nations while introducing the BBL to millions of Indian fans.

Cricket Australia officials said Chennai was chosen because of its passionate cricket culture and the iconic Chepauk Stadium. The overseas opener is expected to attract a packed crowd and a massive global television audience, potentially paving the way for more international BBL matches in the future.
