Residents of Chennai are expected to experience very hot and humid weather despite the ongoing southwest monsoon, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasting maximum temperatures of 38–39°C over the coming days. High humidity levels are likely to make outdoor conditions feel even hotter, pushing the heat index above 45°C in some areas.
Weather officials explained that weak monsoon activity along the Tamil Nadu coast and reduced cloud cover are allowing temperatures to rise significantly during the daytime. Although isolated light showers are possible in some parts of the city during the evening, they are not expected to provide substantial relief from the oppressive heat and humidity.
The RMC has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., wear light-colored clothing, and check on children, older adults, and people with medical conditions who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Health authorities have also urged outdoor workers to take regular breaks and remain alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
