The long-awaited Adambakkam MRTS station in Chennai is expected to open to passengers within the next month after Southern Railway completed repairs to a critical platform safety issue. The station is part of the 4.5-km Velachery–St. Thomas Mount MRTS extension, which began operations in March 2026, but Adambakkam remained closed because railway safety inspectors identified a hazardous gap between train coaches and the curved platform.
According to Southern Railway officials, engineering teams have substantially reduced the platform gap by carrying out corrective civil works. Once the Commissioner of Railway Safety confirms the station meets all safety standards, trains will begin stopping at Adambakkam, completing the final phase of the extension.
The opening of the station is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters from Adambakkam, Nanganallur, and Madipakkam, offering faster access to Chennai Beach, Velachery, and St. Thomas Mount. It will also improve multimodal connectivity with the nearby Chennai Metro network, making travel across the city more convenient.
The Velachery–St. Thomas Mount MRTS extension was delayed for nearly two decades due to land acquisition and construction challenges. With Adambakkam station set to become operational, commuters will finally gain access to the last remaining station on the extension, significantly enhancing public transport in South Chennai.
