A 40-day awareness campaign by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has resulted in a significant increase in household waste segregation across five southern zones of Chennai.

The “Kuppai Pirippom–Naalai Kaapom” (Segregate Garbage, Save Tomorrow) campaign focused on encouraging residents to separate waste at source through door-to-door awareness and monitoring. The campaign covered Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.

According to GCC data, the number of households actively segregating waste increased from 3,887 at the beginning of the campaign to 6,914 by September 28. Officials said 45,000 dry-waste bags were distributed and 51,436 monitoring stickers were placed outside homes.

Adyar recorded the largest increase, with participating households rising from 1,980 to 3,400. Alandur increased from 602 to 1,100 households, while Perungudi rose from 560 to 1,000. Sholinganallur and Valasaravakkam also recorded increases.

The campaign is part of Chennai’s broader effort to make source segregation a regular household practice. The corporation has also moved toward mandatory four-way segregation covering wet, dry, sanitary and domestic hazardous waste.

The GCC plans to continue strengthening awareness and collection systems so that improved segregation becomes a sustained practice across the city.
