The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of India from September 17 to September 22. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is possible at isolated locations in a number of states.
The weather system is expected to affect parts of northwest, central, eastern, northeastern, western and southern peninsular India. States mentioned in the forecast include Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand.
Several southern states are also included in the weather alert, including Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The forecast also covers parts of the Himalayan region and the northeastern states, along with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
The IMD has advised people in affected areas to remain alert during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Local authorities may issue additional warnings depending on changing weather conditions
