India and Vietnam have agreed to accelerate cooperation in defence technology and the maritime sector, according to a report published today. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The two countries are looking at ways to expand cooperation between their defence industries and improve the sharing of defence technologies. Maritime cooperation is also an important part of the relationship because both India and Vietnam have strategic interests in maintaining security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The agreement comes at a time when India is increasing its focus on defence manufacturing and technology partnerships with friendly countries. India has been working to expand domestic defence production while also developing international partnerships for advanced military equipment and technology.
Vietnam is an important partner for India in Southeast Asia. The two countries have developed closer strategic relations over recent years, particularly in areas such as defence, maritime security, trade and connectivity.
Greater defence-industrial cooperation could create opportunities for technology sharing, joint development and training. It may also strengthen India’s broader engagement with Southeast Asian nations.
Officials from both countries emphasized the importance of stronger maritime ties and faster cooperation in defence technology. The latest discussions are therefore being viewed as another step toward strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Vietnam
