Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has provided ₹50 lakh in financial assistance to the family of Range Forest Officer Vikas Desai, who died while attempting to stop illegal timber smugglers in Tapi district. The assistance was presented during National Forest Martyrs’ Day observances in Gandhinagar.

The state also provided ₹2 lakh to a forest department employee who was injured during a recent wildlife encounter.

National Forest Martyrs’ Day is observed to remember forest personnel who have lost their lives while protecting forests and wildlife. According to the Gujarat government, 11 forest personnel from the state have died in the line of duty since 1981.

Forest officers and frontline staff often work in difficult conditions while dealing with illegal logging, wildlife crime and encounters with wild animals. Their responsibilities can involve significant personal risk, particularly in remote forest areas.

The event in Gandhinagar was therefore used to recognise the contribution of forest guards, foresters and range forest officers.

The financial assistance provided to the affected families is also intended to support those who have lost family members in the course of protecting forests and wildlife.
