Kochi, September 10, 2026: The Kochi Corporation has intensified inspections of drinking-water sources at hotels and eateries following the detection of E. coli contamination in samples collected from establishments across the city.

The civic body has collected 118 drinking-water samples as part of the ongoing safety checks. Of these, seven samples were found to be unsafe, prompting authorities to step up inspections and investigate the possible sources of contamination.

Officials are examining water supplied to restaurants and other food establishments, with particular attention being paid to hygiene practices, storage tanks and the condition of water-supply systems. The inspections are aimed at preventing contaminated water from being served to customers.

The presence of E. coli, a bacterium commonly associated with faecal contamination, can indicate that water is not safe for consumption. Contaminated drinking water can potentially cause gastrointestinal illnesses, particularly when basic sanitation and hygiene standards are not maintained.

Kochi Corporation officials are also looking into how the contamination occurred and whether there are common sources affecting multiple establishments. Further sampling and inspections are expected as part of the investigation.

The intensified checks come amid growing concerns over food and water safety in Kochi. Authorities have urged hotels and eateries to ensure that drinking water is properly treated and stored and that tanks and related facilities are regularly cleaned.

The civic body’s inspection drive is expected to continue, with action likely against establishments found violating public-health and sanitation requirements. Officials have also stressed the importance of safe drinking water in protecting consumers and preventing the spread of water-borne diseases.
