Thiruvananthapuram, September 2, 2026: Kerala has marked a significant milestone in international trade with the departure of MSC Beryl from Vizhinjam International Seaport, carrying the state’s first export consignment from the port to Valencia, Spain.
The vessel departed with eight containers carrying products from Kerala, including packaged food products and seafood, marking an important step in Vizhinjam’s transition from a major transshipment hub into a gateway for exports from the state.
The consignment is particularly significant for Kerala’s exporters, as the availability of a modern deep-water port close to the state’s production centres could help reduce dependence on ports outside Kerala for international shipments.
The shipment to Valencia also demonstrates the potential for Kerala-based businesses to access European markets more efficiently. Food-processing companies, seafood exporters and other manufacturers could benefit from improved connectivity to international shipping routes.
Vizhinjam International Seaport, located near Thiruvananthapuram, has emerged as one of India’s important deep-water ports. Its strategic location close to major international shipping routes gives it an advantage in handling large container vessels.
The departure of MSC Beryl is being viewed as an important development for the state’s logistics and export sector. Better direct connectivity could help businesses reduce transportation time and improve supply-chain efficiency.
For Kerala’s seafood industry in particular, faster access to international markets is expected to be valuable because many seafood products require efficient handling and transportation to maintain quality.
The latest shipment also reinforces expectations that Vizhinjam can play a larger role in Kerala’s international trade, logistics and maritime economy in the coming years.
As more exporters begin using the port, authorities and industry stakeholders are expected to focus on developing supporting infrastructure, warehousing, cold-chain facilities and efficient customs procedures.
The successful departure of the first export consignment therefore represents more than a single shipment—it signals a new chapter for Kerala’s export ambitions and the growing importance of Vizhinjam as an international maritime gateway.
