KOCHI | September 2, 2026: The long-awaited Arur–Thuravoor elevated highway has entered its final stages, with authorities targeting October 15, 2026, for completion of the primary structural works. The 12.75-km elevated corridor is being developed as part of the NH 66 widening project and is expected to significantly improve traffic movement between Kochi and Alappuzha.

The project has faced several delays since construction began, with the shifting and raising of a 110-kV KSEB transmission line emerging as one of the major hurdles. According to an NHAI official, the clearance issue affected six structural spans. After the power-line work was resolved, construction progressed on the remaining sections.

A major milestone was achieved in August when the final concrete girder—the 2,566th—was lifted into position. This marked an important step toward completing the elevated structure.

Work is now focused on completing the remaining structural and associated works, including concrete sections, approach roads, service roads, drainage and safety-related infrastructure. A key 70-metre section involving 14 girders over three pillars was also taken up for concrete work in late August.

The elevated highway is expected to provide a more efficient route along one of Kerala’s busiest transport corridors. Once opened, it could help reduce the persistent congestion experienced along the Arur–Thuravoor stretch, particularly for commuters and long-distance traffic travelling between Kochi and Alappuzha.

The project had originally faced earlier completion targets, but delays pushed the schedule forward. Officials are now aiming to complete the structural works by October and finish the remaining works so that the corridor can be opened to traffic later in 2026.
