Thiruvananthapuram, July 23: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has launched a trial Pink Bus service exclusively for women passengers in Thiruvananthapuram, marking another step toward improving the safety, comfort, and convenience of women using public transportation. The initiative follows the positive response to the state’s Priyadarshini free bus travel scheme and is expected to encourage more women to choose public transport for their daily commute.
The Pink Bus service has been introduced on a trial basis to assess passenger response and operational feasibility before expanding the programme to other parts of the state. The buses are specially designated for women passengers and are intended to provide a safer and more comfortable travel environment, particularly during peak commuting hours.
According to KSRTC officials, the initiative is part of the corporation’s broader efforts to modernise public transport and make it more inclusive. The buses will operate on selected routes in Thiruvananthapuram, connecting important residential areas, educational institutions, government offices, and commercial centres. Passenger feedback collected during the trial phase will help determine future route expansions and service improvements.
The launch comes after the successful implementation of the Priyadarshini scheme, which significantly increased the number of women using KSRTC services by offering free bus travel. Officials believe that the Pink Bus service will complement the existing scheme by addressing concerns related to passenger safety, convenience, and accessibility.
Women commuters have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the dedicated service will provide a more secure travel experience, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Many passengers also believe the programme could encourage greater participation of women in education, employment, and other economic activities by making daily travel more comfortable.
