Thiruvananthapuram, July 23: A medical college student has been arrested in Thiruvananthapuram for allegedly creating and circulating morphed obscene images of a fellow student through social media platforms. The incident has sparked concern over the misuse of digital technology and online harassment, prompting police to launch a detailed investigation into the case.
According to police officials, the accused allegedly used image-editing software to manipulate photographs of the victim and circulated the fabricated images through social media and messaging applications. The victim later approached the authorities after becoming aware of the circulation of the morphed images, leading to the registration of a formal complaint.
A cybercrime investigation was initiated immediately, during which digital evidence was collected and examined. Investigators reportedly traced the source of the images and identified the suspect, following which the student was taken into custody. Electronic devices, including mobile phones and computers, have been seized for forensic examination to determine whether similar offences were committed previously or if other individuals were involved.
Police officials stated that appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act have been invoked in the case. Authorities are also examining the extent of the circulation of the images and whether additional charges may be applicable based on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of cyber harassment and the misuse of digital platforms to target individuals. Educational institutions have expressed concern over such incidents and have urged students to use social media responsibly while respecting the privacy and dignity of others.
