The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has intensified preparedness measures across the state as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. With the southwest monsoon remaining active, disaster management officials have urged residents, particularly those in vulnerable areas, to stay alert and strictly follow official safety advisories.
According to the latest weather warnings, Kannur and Kasaragod are under an Orange Alert today due to the likelihood of very heavy rainfall. Several other districts, including Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, remain under a Yellow Alert, indicating the possibility of heavy showers and localized flooding.
The KSDMA has instructed people residing in landslide-prone, mudslide-prone, and flash flood-prone regions to shift to safer locations immediately if directed by local authorities. Residents living along riverbanks and downstream of dams have also been advised to remain vigilant as continuous rainfall could cause water levels to rise rapidly. Emergency shelters and district control rooms are on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents.
Authorities have also appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Tourists have been advised to postpone visits to waterfalls, reservoirs, and hilly destinations until weather conditions improve. Motorists are urged to exercise caution on roads affected by waterlogging or landslide risks, while fishermen have been warned against venturing into rough seas due to strong winds and high waves.
The Disaster Management Authority has further asked local bodies to monitor vulnerable infrastructure, including trees, electric poles, retaining walls, and signboards, to minimize accidents caused by strong winds. Citizens are encouraged to prepare emergency kits, keep essential medicines and documents ready, and contact the state emergency helpline numbers 1070 or 1077 in case of emergencies. Officials stated that weather alerts may be revised depending on changing meteorological conditions, and the public is advised to rely only on official updates from the IMD and KSDMA.
