The affected families had been living on the disputed land for several decades. Their eviction became imminent after a court order settled a land ownership case that had remained unresolved for nearly 60 years. Following the government’s intervention, an agreement was reached to provide each family with a new residential plot and a permanent house at the same location, ensuring they would not be left homeless.
Officials have already shared three different house designs with the beneficiaries for review. The families have been asked to study the plans in consultation with engineers and architects before submitting their preferred design. According to officials, each house will have an area of approximately 1,000 square feet and will include three bedrooms, a living room, a hall, a kitchen, and a sit-out, offering improved living conditions and modern amenities.
The rehabilitation package is the outcome of coordinated efforts by the state government, district administration, and legal authorities to arrive at an amicable solution. Earlier, the Kerala High Court had granted the government additional time to implement the settlement after it informed the court that both parties had agreed to resolve the dispute peacefully.
The upcoming foundation stone ceremony marks the beginning of the rehabilitation project and is expected to bring long-awaited relief to the affected families. Local residents and officials have welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important example of balancing legal obligations with humanitarian concerns. Once completed, the project will provide the families with secure homes while bringing closure to one of Ernakulam district’s longest-running land disputes.
