Wayanad Landslide Claims Lives; Rescue Operations Continue

Wayanad, July 7: A major landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall struck the Kalladi area near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday, claiming lives and leaving several workers trapped at an under-construction tunnel project. The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge, where work on the Anakampoyil–Meppadi tunnel project was underway, prompting a massive rescue operation involving multiple emergency agencies.

According to officials, the landslide occurred after intense monsoon rains caused a large mound of excavated earth and mud to collapse onto the construction site. Several workers were caught beneath the debris, while nearby vehicles used by the project staff were also damaged. Local residents rushed to the site immediately and managed to rescue a few workers before emergency teams arrived.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, Police, and the State Disaster Management Authority have been deployed to carry out search-and-rescue operations. Heavy earth-moving equipment, excavators, and specialized rescue tools are being used to remove debris and search for those still missing. Officials said rescue efforts are continuing despite difficult weather conditions and unstable terrain.

Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan reviewed the rescue operation with senior officials and directed all concerned departments to provide every possible assistance. State ministers and district authorities have reached the site to coordinate relief efforts and monitor the situation closely. Additional rescue teams have also been kept on standby in case further assistance is required.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Wayanad to landslides during the southwest monsoon. Authorities have urged residents in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and strictly follow advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.

Investigations into the exact cause of the landslide are underway. Officials are expected to examine whether heavy rainfall alone caused the collapse or whether conditions at the construction site contributed to the disaster. Rescue operations are continuing as authorities race against time to locate those still feared trapped beneath the debris.
