Thiruvananthapuram, July 4: Kerala has recorded its heaviest 24-hour rainfall of the 2026 southwest monsoon season, with widespread heavy to extremely heavy rain affecting several districts across the state. The intense downpour has disrupted normal life, inundating low-lying areas, causing waterlogging in towns and cities, and increasing the risk of landslides in hilly regions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for multiple districts, warning that heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days. District administrations have advised residents living near rivers, dams, and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official safety instructions.
Heavy rainfall has led to traffic congestion in major cities, including Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode, as several roads were submerged under water. Public transport services experienced delays, while motorists were urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during periods of intense rainfall.
Authorities have also stepped up monitoring of reservoirs and dams as water levels continue to rise. Emergency response teams, including Fire and Rescue Services, Police, and the State Disaster Management Authority, have been placed on high alert to respond swiftly to any emergencies.
In the high-range districts of Idukki, Wayanad, and Pathanamthitta, officials have warned of the possibility of landslides and soil erosion due to saturated ground conditions. Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to stay alert and relocate to safer places if instructed by local authorities.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea because of rough sea conditions, strong winds, and high waves along the Kerala coast.
The state government has appealed to the public to remain cautious, monitor weather updates, and avoid venturing into flooded areas or crossing overflowing rivers. With the monsoon expected to remain active over the coming days, disaster management agencies continue to monitor the situation closely to minimize risks and ensure public safety.
