A tragic accident at a stone quarry on the outskirts of Bengaluru claimed the lives of eight daily-wage labourers after a massive rock collapse buried workers beneath tonnes of debris. The incident occurred near Madapattana, sending shockwaves across the region and raising fresh concerns about safety standards in quarrying operations.
According to officials, the labourers were carrying out routine quarry work when a large section of rock suddenly gave way, triggering a devastating collapse. The impact trapped several workers under heavy stones and rubble, leaving them with little chance of escape. Local residents immediately alerted emergency services, following which teams from the police, fire department, and disaster response forces rushed to the site.
A large-scale rescue operation was launched using excavators, cranes, and other heavy machinery to remove the debris. Despite the efforts of rescue personnel, eight workers were found dead. Authorities said that most of the victims were migrant labourers from Bihar, who had travelled to Karnataka in search of employment. Officials also confirmed that a few injured workers were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, while rescue teams continued to inspect the site to ensure no one remained trapped.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured them of all necessary assistance. He also ordered a high-level inquiry to determine the cause of the accident and identify any negligence that may have contributed to the collapse.
Following the incident, the Karnataka Government directed officials to conduct comprehensive safety inspections at stone quarries across the state. Authorities have warned that quarry operators found violating safety regulations or operating without proper permissions will face strict legal action.
The accident has once again highlighted the importance of enforcing workplace safety standards in high-risk industries such as mining and quarrying. Labour organizations have urged authorities to strengthen safety monitoring, ensure the use of protective equipment, and conduct regular inspections to prevent similar tragedies. The investigation is expected to determine whether lapses in safety protocols or geological conditions led to the fatal collapse.
