Chennai is expected to face a hotter-than-normal June, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of rising temperatures, warm nights, and possible heatwave conditions across the city and nearby coastal districts. According to the latest forecast, Chennai could experience two to three heatwave days during June, while daytime temperatures may frequently reach 40–41°C.

The city has already recorded some of its hottest days of the year this week, with both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories crossing the 40°C mark on multiple occasions. Weather officials say above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures are likely across much of Tamil Nadu, increasing heat stress, especially in urban areas.

Despite the heatwave warning, IMD has also predicted periods of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of Chennai and northern Tamil Nadu. These rain spells may provide temporary relief, although experts say humidity levels could remain high and make conditions feel even more uncomfortable.

IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that many regions across India are likely to experience hotter days and nights during June due to reduced rainfall activity. The department has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, and follow official weather updates as temperatures continue to rise.

Officials are also monitoring the situation closely as concerns grow over heat-related illnesses and pressure on electricity demand. Weather experts believe intermittent rainfall may bring short-term cooling, but overall June is expected to remain warmer than average across Chennai and much of coastal Tamil Nadu.
