The Motor Vehicles Department has reported that 44 school buses in Kochi failed mandatory fitness inspections conducted ahead of the reopening of schools. Officials stated that the buses were declared unfit for operation after test drives and technical examinations revealed major mechanical defects and safety issues.

According to transport authorities, the inspections were carried out as part of the annual pre-academic year safety checks aimed at ensuring the safety of students traveling in school vehicles. The defective buses were identified during inspections conducted at various testing centers across Kochi under the supervision of Motor Vehicles Department officials.

Authorities said the buses failed due to multiple issues including brake problems, worn-out tyres, faulty lighting systems, steering defects, poor emergency exits, damaged seats, and inadequate fire safety equipment. Some vehicles were also reportedly found operating without proper maintenance records and required documentation.

Officials clarified that buses failing the inspections would not be permitted to operate until all defects are repaired and fresh fitness certificates are issued. The department has directed school managements and private operators to complete necessary repairs immediately before the beginning of the new academic year.

The inspection drive has sparked concern among parents regarding the safety standards of school transportation services. Parent associations welcomed the strict inspections and urged authorities to continue regular monitoring throughout the year to avoid accidents and ensure student safety.

Transport officials stated that surprise inspections may also be conducted after schools reopen to verify compliance with safety regulations. The Motor Vehicles Department has additionally instructed schools to ensure that buses are equipped with speed governors, first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, CCTV systems, and trained attendants as per safety guidelines.

Meanwhile, school authorities have assured parents that corrective measures are being taken and defective buses will undergo repairs before being allowed back on the roads. The inspection campaign highlights the increasing focus on transport safety and preventive measures ahead of the new school term in Kerala.
