In a significant move to tackle rising drug abuse, Hyderabad city police have announced that every police station will now be equipped with drug testing kits. This initiative aims to identify and control substance abuse, particularly among repeat offenders and individuals showing suspicious behavior.
The announcement came after senior police officials reviewed cases involving individuals with criminal backgrounds. During recent checks, authorities found that out of 239 individuals tested, 188 were positive for drug use, highlighting the scale of the problem.
Police have been instructed to conduct tests especially during night patrols, when drug-related activities are more likely to occur. The move is expected to strengthen law enforcement and act as a deterrent against substance abuse.
In addition to enforcement, authorities are also focusing on rehabilitation. Several individuals identified as drug users have been admitted to de-addiction programs at government hospitals. These programs aim to provide medical treatment and counseling, helping individuals reintegrate into society.
Officials emphasized that the approach is not purely punitive but also corrective. By combining strict monitoring with treatment options, the police hope to reduce repeat offenses and improve public safety.
Experts say this initiative reflects a growing shift toward public health-oriented policing, where addressing root causes like addiction is as important as enforcing the law.
If implemented effectively, the program could become a model for other cities dealing with similar challenges related to drug abuse and crime.
