The government of Telangana has approached the Centre with a request to procure 30 lakh metric tonnes of boiled rice during the ongoing rabi (yasangi) season. This move comes as the state anticipates a strong agricultural output, with officials estimating nearly 90 lakh metric tonnes of paddy production.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recently met Union Minister Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi to push for the proposal. According to state authorities, the Centre has given an in-principle approval, though final logistics and timelines are still being worked out.
In addition to procurement, Telangana has raised concerns about pending dues exceeding ₹1,400 crore, which are yet to be cleared by the Centre. The state also urged the Union government to resume the supply of fortified rice for welfare programs such as mid-day meals and public distribution systems. Officials argue that these programs are essential for improving nutrition among children and vulnerable populations.
The procurement process is particularly important for farmers, as it ensures a minimum support price (MSP) and prevents distress selling. With rising input costs and market uncertainties, guaranteed procurement offers stability to agricultural households.
Experts note that if approved fully, the procurement plan could significantly boost rural incomes and strengthen Telangana’s agricultural economy. However, coordination between state and central agencies will be crucial to ensure timely procurement, storage, and distribution.
