Residents of Bengaluru are set to face higher electricity bills as the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company has reported a significant financial loss of around ₹2,803 crore for the financial year 2024–25.
To recover these losses, BESCOM has announced a tariff increase of about 56 paise per unit, which will come into effect from May 2026 and remain applicable for one year. The hike will affect consumers across multiple districts served by the utility, including Bengaluru and surrounding regions.
Officials have attributed the losses mainly to rising power procurement costs, which have increased due to fluctuations in energy prices and higher demand. As a result, the burden is being partially passed on to consumers.
For households, especially middle-class families, this means a noticeable increase in monthly electricity bills. Small businesses and commercial establishments are also expected to feel the impact, potentially increasing operational costs.
Energy experts say such tariff hikes are not uncommon but highlight the need for better financial planning and energy efficiency measures. Some suggest that investments in renewable energy sources could help reduce long-term costs and dependency on expensive power purchases.
While the hike may help stabilize BESCOM’s finances, it has raised concerns among citizens about affordability, especially during summer when electricity usage is high. Authorities have urged consumers to adopt energy-saving practices to minimize the impact.
