The Tamil Nadu government has announced that the Velachery–Tambaram High Road in Chennai will be renamed in honor of Major Mukund Varadharajan, recognizing his extraordinary courage and sacrifice in service to the nation.
The 16-kilometer arterial road, which connects several key residential and commercial areas in South Chennai, will now bear the name of the decorated Indian Army officer. The decision was approved by the state government as a tribute to Major Mukund Varadharajan, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, for his bravery during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials stated that the renaming is intended to preserve the legacy of the fallen soldier and inspire future generations with his example of patriotism and selfless service. The road serves thousands of commuters daily and is one of the most important transport corridors linking Velachery, Pallikaranai, Medavakkam, and Tambaram.
The announcement has been welcomed by veterans, residents, and civic organizations, many of whom praised the government’s effort to honor a national hero in a visible and lasting manner. Administrative procedures for updating road signage and official records are expected to begin soon.
