THRISSUR, September 25: A major power disruption at the Government Medical College Hospital in Mulamkunnathukavu, Thrissur, has disrupted hospital services, with authorities temporarily suspending scheduled surgeries and limiting operations to emergency procedures.

The disruption began around 10 pm on Thursday, with the hospital experiencing a complete power failure by Friday morning. According to hospital authorities, the problem was linked to a technical fault affecting the electrical system supplying the medical college.

The outage has affected several departments, including outpatient services, the cath lab, the chiller plant and audiology services. Scheduled elective surgeries were postponed, while emergency surgeries continued with backup arrangements.

The medical college reportedly conducts an average of 24 surgeries a day, making the disruption significant for patients who had already arrived for planned procedures. Hundreds of patients are reported to have been affected by the interruption.

The hospital is a major referral centre serving patients from Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. The suspension of outpatient and diagnostic services also caused difficulties for patients and attendants who had travelled to the hospital from different parts of the region.

Hospital authorities said efforts were under way to rectify the electrical fault. Emergency and critical services were being supported through available backup power arrangements while restoration work continued.

Officials expressed hope that the electrical supply could be restored after repair work. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of reliable power infrastructure for major government hospitals, where even short disruptions can affect critical medical operations.
