Thiruvananthapuram, August 3:
Continuous heavy rainfall across Kerala has forced district administrations to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in 11 districts on Monday as a precautionary measure. The decision follows forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has warned of continued heavy rainfall, strong winds, and the possibility of flooding and landslides in several parts of the state.
The closure applies to government, aided, unaided, CBSE, ICSE, and professional educational institutions in the affected districts. In Kozhikode, authorities have directed schools to conduct online classes wherever possible to ensure that students’ learning is not disrupted.
The state has witnessed exceptionally heavy monsoon showers over the past few days, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas, overflowing rivers, and disruptions to road transport. Disaster management teams remain on alert, while local authorities are closely monitoring vulnerable locations for possible landslides and flash floods.
Parents and students have been advised to rely only on official announcements from district administrations regarding school closures and examination schedules. Authorities have also urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in hilly regions and areas prone to flooding, until weather conditions improve.
The IMD has indicated that heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next few days, with warnings remaining in effect for several districts. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough weather and high waves along the Kerala coast.
