Thiruvananthapuram, August 1: Continuous heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions have intensified concerns across Kerala, with severe coastal erosion reported in parts of the state’s coastline and river levels rising above warning marks in several districts. Disaster management authorities have stepped up monitoring and rescue operations as flooding and erosion threaten homes, roads, and public infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
In Ernakulam district, coastal villages such as Chellanam have once again experienced strong wave action and shoreline erosion. Residents in the affected areas have reported repeated seawater intrusion into low-lying neighbourhoods, raising concerns about damage to houses and fishing infrastructure. Community leaders have reiterated the need to accelerate coastal protection measures, including the extension of the ongoing tetrapod seawall project to safeguard the remaining vulnerable stretches of coastline.
At the same time, water levels in major rivers, including the Pampa, have crossed warning levels following continuous monsoon rains. District administrations have issued alerts to people living along riverbanks and in flood-prone regions, advising them to remain vigilant and be prepared for evacuation if conditions worsen. Local authorities are closely monitoring reservoirs, spillways, and river flows to reduce the risk of sudden flooding.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has deployed emergency response teams in vulnerable districts while relief camps have been opened for families displaced by flooding and sea erosion. Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel through inundated areas, stay away from swollen rivers and unstable hill slopes, and follow updates issued by the IMD and district administrations.
Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve, as rough seas and strong winds continue along the Kerala coast. Authorities warned that high waves and storm surges could pose a significant risk to small fishing vessels and coastal communities.
With the southwest monsoon remaining active, officials have urged the public to remain alert and cooperate with emergency services. The government has assured that rescue teams, relief materials, and disaster response personnel are on standby to respond swiftly to any further emergencies arising from heavy rainfall, flooding, or coastal erosion.
