Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Monday, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 20 others, according to Ukrainian authorities. The overnight assault triggered air raid sirens across the city as residents rushed to shelters, while emergency crews responded to multiple explosions and fires.
The strikes damaged several residential buildings, including an apartment block in Kyiv’s historic Podil district, where rescuers searched through the rubble for people believed to be trapped. Falling drone debris also caused fires and destruction in other districts, leaving dozens of families displaced. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that emergency services remained on-site throughout the morning to extinguish fires and assist affected residents.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said intelligence had warned of a large-scale Russian assault and renewed his appeal to Western allies for additional air defence systems, particularly Patriot missile batteries. The attack came just one day before the NATO summit in Ankara, where the war in Ukraine is expected to be a key topic of discussion among alliance leaders. Analysts believe the timing of the strike was intended to increase military and diplomatic pressure ahead of the high-level meeting.
