Thiruvananthapuram, September 8, 2026: After several days of unusually high temperatures, Kerala is expected to receive increased rainfall from Thursday, September 10, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting isolated heavy rain in parts of the state through September 12.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for six districts over September 10 and 11. Alappuzha and Ernakulam are under yellow alert on September 10, while Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam are expected to receive the alert on September 11.

The weather department defines heavy rainfall under the yellow-alert category as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Isolated areas in the alerted districts could therefore experience periods of intense rainfall during the forecast period.

The change in weather comes as Kerala continues to experience hot and humid conditions. The IMD has warned that temperatures could remain around 3–4°C above normal at isolated places on September 8 and 9, before rainfall activity becomes more prominent.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has advised residents to remain alert, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and other rain-related impacts. People are also encouraged to follow official weather updates and local authority instructions during periods of heavy rain.

According to the latest forecast, rainfall activity is expected to continue through September 12, with heavy rain possible at isolated locations. The weather is then expected to gradually become less active over the following days.

The expected return of rain could provide much-needed relief from Kerala’s recent heat, while authorities remain watchful for isolated episodes of heavy rainfall across the alerted districts.
