HYDERABAD | September 3, 2026: Doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, have successfully treated a 30-year-old labourer suffering from multiple serious heart problems through a complex minimally invasive procedure.
The patient had been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, an enlarged heart chamber and weakened heart muscle, making the treatment particularly challenging. A specialised cardiology team led by Prof. O. Sai Satish, Head of Cardiology at NIMS, performed an Electrophysiological Study (EPS) followed by Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA).
Doctors used advanced 3D electro-anatomical mapping technology to precisely locate the source of the patient’s abnormal heart rhythm. The problematic area was found to be extremely close to a major heart valve and a major coronary artery, increasing the risks associated with the procedure.
To minimise the possibility of damaging vital structures, the medical team first mapped the patient’s blood vessels using an angiogram. They then carefully delivered radiofrequency energy to the small area of heart tissue responsible for the irregular electrical activity.
The procedure was completed successfully, and the patient reportedly tolerated the treatment well and recovered without complications. Follow-up monitoring showed complete suppression of the abnormal heartbeats.
The treatment was also carried out free of cost under the Aarogyasri Scheme, providing access to advanced cardiac care for the patient despite the complexity of the procedure.
The case highlights the growing role of advanced cardiac-electrophysiology techniques in treating difficult heart-rhythm disorders. The use of 3D mapping allows specialists to identify abnormal electrical pathways with greater precision, particularly when the treatment area lies close to critical cardiac structures.
NIMS has increasingly been using advanced technologies for complex procedures while providing treatment through government-supported healthcare schemes. The successful intervention adds to the institute’s recent record of specialised cardiac and minimally invasive treatments.
