Chennai: Dr. G. S. Sameeran has officially taken charge as the new commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), with a strong focus on improving pedestrian safety, strengthening flood mitigation systems, and enhancing civic preparedness across the city.

A 2012-batch IAS officer, Sameeran succeeds J. Kumaragurubaran and brings extensive administrative experience to the role. He previously served in several key positions, including district collector of Coimbatore and Tenkasi, and managing director of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and TWAD Board.

According to reports, Chennai’s flood-management infrastructure and urban safety measures will receive immediate attention under the new administration. The GCC has already been involved in multiple flood-resilience projects, including stormwater drain expansion and climate-adaptation initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of heavy monsoon rains.

Officials also stated that civic preparedness, stray animal management, and public safety on roads and pedestrian zones will be among the corporation’s top priorities in the coming months.
