Milk prices across Kerala are set to increase by ₹4 per litre from June 1 following a revised pricing decision announced by dairy authorities. The hike is expected to affect consumers throughout the state, while dairy farmers and cooperative societies have welcomed the move, stating that it will help address rising production costs and improve the sustainability of the dairy sector.
According to officials, the revised pricing was approved after discussions regarding increasing expenses faced by dairy farmers, including cattle feed prices, transportation charges, electricity costs, and labour expenses. Dairy cooperative representatives argued that the existing milk price structure was no longer sufficient to support farmers who have been struggling with reduced profit margins over the past several months.
Under the revised rates, the retail price of milk will increase by ₹4 per litre, with a significant portion of the additional amount expected to directly benefit dairy farmers. Authorities stated that the decision was taken to ensure fair compensation for milk producers and to encourage continued milk production within the state.
Consumer organizations, however, expressed concern over the price hike, especially at a time when households are already facing increased living expenses. Hotel owners, tea shops, bakeries, and small businesses that rely heavily on milk products are also expected to feel the impact of the revised pricing.
Officials from dairy cooperatives assured that efforts would continue to maintain milk quality and ensure uninterrupted supply across Kerala despite the increase. The revised rates are also expected to strengthen local dairy production and reduce dependence on milk imports from neighbouring states.
Meanwhile, economic experts noted that rising inflation and operational costs have forced several states in India to revise milk prices in recent months. The Kerala government is expected to closely monitor market conditions and public response once the new rates come into effect on June 1.
The announcement has sparked widespread discussion among consumers, traders, and dairy farmers as Kerala prepares for another increase in essential commodity prices.
