Hyderabad, September 1, 2026: A major security breach has been reported at the Secunderabad Cantonment, where several weapons and ammunition were found missing from an arms storage facility belonging to the Madras Regiment. The incident has triggered a joint investigation by the Army and Malkajgiri police.
According to reports, the missing weapons include four AK-series assault rifles, an INSAS rifle and several pistols, along with magazines and ammunition. Different reports have provided slightly different inventories as the authorities continue verifying the weapons and ammunition records.
The incident came to light after personnel discovered that the locks of the weapons-storage area and ammunition boxes had been broken. The weapons had reportedly last been accounted for on August 30, while the discrepancy was detected on August 31.
Following the discovery, the Army secured and sealed the affected area and began a detailed verification of weapons, ammunition registers and access records. Police have also registered a case at Bollaram Police Station and are examining CCTV footage and the movements of people who had authorised access to the facility.
Investigators are examining the possibility of insider involvement, since access to the storage area was restricted to authorised personnel. Guards and other personnel connected with the facility are being questioned as authorities try to determine how the security breach occurred.
Importantly, a later report from NDTV said the missing weapons had been recovered, although the investigation into how they went missing and who was responsible remains underway.
The incident has raised questions about security procedures at sensitive military installations. Authorities are reviewing access controls, guard deployment and storage security as part of the investigation.
