The Madras High Court has sought a response from state authorities over allegations of lake encroachment in the Tambaram region, raising fresh concerns about environmental degradation and urban planning lapses.

The court issued notices to officials from the Tamil Nadu Government and local civic bodies after a petition highlighted illegal constructions and land reclamation activities affecting a water body in the Tambaram area.

According to the petition, portions of the lake have reportedly been encroached upon for residential and commercial developments, potentially disrupting natural drainage systems and increasing the risk of flooding during monsoon seasons.

During the hearing, the bench emphasized the importance of protecting water bodies and directed authorities to submit a detailed report on the current status of the lake, steps taken to remove encroachments, and measures planned for restoration.

Environmental experts have warned that continued encroachment of lakes and wetlands in urban areas like Chennai could worsen water scarcity while also heightening flood risks, especially during heavy rainfall.

The matter has been posted for further hearing, with the court expected to review the responses and decide on necessary action to safeguard the water body.
