Thiruvananthapuram, July 15: In a major step toward strengthening technology-enabled education, the Kerala Government has announced the launch of two ambitious initiatives—Digital Square and ARISE (AI & Robotics Initiatives for School Education)—to modernize classrooms and equip students with future-ready skills. The projects will be implemented by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) as part of the state’s continuing efforts to enhance digital learning in government schools.
The Digital Square initiative, included in the government’s 100-day action plan, aims to expand technology integration in primary and upper primary schools. The project will introduce advanced digital tools and interactive learning methods to create a more engaging classroom environment. By encouraging creativity, scientific thinking, and digital literacy from an early age, the initiative seeks to prepare students for an increasingly technology-driven world.
The second initiative, ARISE, focuses on bringing Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Drone Technology into high school education. Under the programme, advanced laboratories equipped with robotics kits will be established in schools across the state. Students and teachers will receive hands-on training, enabling learners to develop practical skills in emerging technologies while fostering innovation and problem-solving abilities.
General Education Minister N. Samsudheen, while announcing the projects at the state-level Little KITEs Awards Ceremony, said the initiatives are designed to create a strong digital culture in schools and help students acquire the knowledge required for the jobs of the future. He also announced that the Little KITEs IT Clubs will be expanded to more schools during the current academic year, giving thousands of additional students opportunities to learn coding, multimedia, electronics, and digital content creation.
Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, who inaugurated the event, highlighted the importance of technology-based learning in today’s rapidly evolving world. He noted that programmes such as Little KITEs have played a significant role in developing students’ digital competencies and encouraging innovation. During the event, the government also acknowledged corporate support from State Bank of India and Cochin Shipyard, which contributed funds for deploying advanced robotics kits in public schools.
In addition to these initiatives, the government will implement the Cyber Safety Protocol 2026 to ensure a secure online learning environment for students. Kerala has long been recognised as a pioneer in digital education, having already equipped thousands of government schools with smart classrooms, high-speed internet connectivity, and digital learning resources through KITE. The launch of Digital Square and ARISE is expected to further strengthen the state’s position as a national leader in technology-enabled education and prepare students for careers in the digital economy.
