Heavy rainfall has intensified across Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for six districts on September 21. The districts under the alert include Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur. The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong surface winds in isolated areas.
The worsening weather situation follows incidents of landslides and flooding in parts of the state. Several people were reported killed in rain-related incidents, while a flash flood in the Kottapuzha River area of Nilambur swept away six people, according to reports.
Authorities have increased monitoring in vulnerable regions. Officials in districts including Idukki and Kottayam have been instructed to closely assess the situation and take evacuation measures if necessary. Residents in landslide- and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities.
The continuing rainfall is also expected to affect road travel and normal activities in several parts of Kerala. People are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel through areas experiencing flooding, landslides or strong currents.
