India’s formal manufacturing sector recorded broad-based growth during 2024–25, according to the latest Annual Survey of Industries data. Gross Value Added (GVA) increased by 9.6% to ₹26.9 lakh crore, compared with ₹24.6 lakh crore in 2023–24. Industrial output also increased by 7.8% to ₹165.2 lakh crore. The sector added around 1.4 million workers, taking total employment in factories to approximately 21 million. Invested capital increased by 11.1% to ₹75.6 lakh crore, while the number of manufacturing establishments increased by 2.6%. Basic metals accounted for the largest share of manufacturing GVA at 11.6%, followed by motor vehicles, chemical products, pharmaceuticals and food products. Five states—Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh—together accounted for more than half of India’s manufacturing GVA. Tamil Nadu had the largest share of manufacturing employment at 15%, followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat.
