India’s campaign for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council has received fresh support from four European countries, according to reports published today. Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have backed India’s bid for a permanent position on the council.
India has long argued that the structure of the UN Security Council should better reflect the current global distribution of population, economic influence and geopolitical importance. The council currently has five permanent members with veto power: the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom.
Support from European countries adds to India’s diplomatic efforts at the United Nations. India has also received backing from several other countries over the years, although reform of the Security Council requires broad international agreement and faces complex diplomatic challenges.
The issue is expected to remain an important subject during discussions at the 81st UN General Assembly. India’s supporters have highlighted its role in international affairs, its large population and its participation in peacekeeping and global diplomacy.
However, securing permanent membership would require changes to the UN’s existing structure and approval through the required international process. The latest European support therefore represents a diplomatic development rather than an immediate change to India’s status at the United Nations.
