India is planning a major expansion of its nuclear power sector, with an ambitious target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. The country currently has around 8.8 GW of nuclear power capacity. Achieving the target could require approximately $210 billion in investment, according to a Reuters report.

The expansion is part of India’s wider effort to increase clean-energy generation while meeting rapidly growing electricity demand. Nuclear power can provide continuous electricity generation and could complement solar and wind power, which are dependent on weather conditions.

However, experts say India needs to address several challenges before achieving the target. These include attracting investment, developing skilled workers and creating financing mechanisms that can support nuclear projects.

India has recently taken steps to open its nuclear sector further to private participation, with the expectation that private companies could bring additional capital and technology.
