The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved a major overhaul of the format for its flagship men’s tournaments during its Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh. The changes will apply to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, with the aim of making both competitions more competitive and reducing low-stakes matches.
For the 2027 ODI World Cup, the tournament will feature 14 teams and introduce a new three-stage structure. The event will begin with a Super Series, followed by a 12-team main stage, and then a Super 7 round before the semi-finals. The revised format is designed to keep more matches meaningful throughout the tournament while increasing excitement for fans.
The ICC also confirmed a revamped format for the 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup, introducing a Super 10 stage and an Eliminators round. In addition, a new qualification pathway has been approved to provide greater opportunities for Associate nations to reach the global event.
ICC Chair Jay Shah said the revised tournament structures are intended to enhance competitiveness, create more high-quality contests, and improve the overall experience for players, broadcasters, and cricket fans worldwide.
