Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final after producing a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over England in the semifinal at Atlanta Stadium.
England broke the deadlock in the second half through Anthony Gordon, putting the Three Lions on course for their first World Cup final since 1966. However, Argentina responded with determination in the closing stages of the match. Enzo Fernández equalized in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home the winning goal in stoppage time after a brilliant assist from Lionel Messi.
Although Messi did not score, the 39-year-old captain delivered two crucial assists and once again inspired Argentina with his leadership and creativity. His performance helped the reigning champions secure a second consecutive appearance in the FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina will now face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, while England will take on France in the third-place playoff.
