Rainfall is expected to return to parts of Gujarat after a three-week monsoon lull, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 12 in several areas. The weather system could bring relief to some regions that have experienced a significant rainfall shortage.

The situation is particularly important for Saurashtra and Kutch, which continue to face a major rainfall deficit. Between June 1 and September 10, these areas received about 294.8 mm of rainfall compared with a normal 481.8 mm, representing a deficit of roughly 39%.

Gujarat as a whole recorded around 516.9 mm of rainfall during the same period, approximately 20% below the seasonal average of 643.7 mm.

The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for several districts between September 12 and 16. Areas including Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Surat, Dang and parts of Saurashtra are expected to experience significant rainfall. Strong winds and thunderstorms are also possible in some areas.

The expected rainfall could provide some relief to farmers and help improve water availability. However, meteorologists have indicated that the upcoming rains may not completely eliminate the deficit in severely affected regions.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert, particularly because heavy rainfall over a short period can increase the risk of waterlogging and localized flooding.

The coming week will therefore be important for Gujarat’s agriculture, water resources and overall monsoon situation.
