Hyderabad, September 24: Authorities have issued an emergency flood alert for areas downstream of the Musi Project in Telangana following a rise in inflows caused by heavy rainfall in upstream regions. Residents in vulnerable areas of Nalgonda and Suryapet districts have been asked to remain vigilant.
The Musi Project’s water level has reached 640.58 feet, against its full reservoir level of 645 feet. The reservoir currently holds around 3.35 TMC of water, compared with its total capacity of 4.46 TMC.
Irrigation officials recorded inflows of approximately 1,150 cusecs during the previous 24 hours. Officials warned that the inflow could increase further if rainfall continues upstream.
Authorities said the Musi Project gates could be opened if water inflows intensify, prompting the precautionary alert for downstream settlements. Residents have been instructed to follow directions issued by the Irrigation and Revenue departments.
Warnings have been issued for 20 villages across Suryapet, Penpahad and Palakeedu mandals, including Ratnapuram, Anantharam and Chintakuntla. Another set of 21 villages across Kethepally, Madugulapally and Miryalaguda mandals has also been placed under warning.
Officials have urged residents not to enter the Musi River or attempt to cross streams and rivulets, particularly in areas where water levels can rise rapidly. People living in downstream locations have been advised to move to safer places if instructed by authorities.
The flood alert comes amid continuing wet weather across Telangana. The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rain in Telangana on September 24 and heavy rain on September 25, along with thunderstorms and lightning.
Authorities are continuing to monitor rainfall, reservoir levels and inflows. Residents in the affected catchment areas have been advised to remain alert and rely on official announcements as water conditions could change rapidly.
