German authorities have launched a counterterrorism investigation after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe’s largest cargo hubs. The drone was found overnight in a restricted cargo area near the airport’s southern runway, prompting the temporary suspension of flight operations and the diversion of several cargo aircraft.
Bomb disposal experts safely neutralized the device, and officials confirmed there was no immediate danger to passengers or airport staff. Most airport operations resumed later in the day, although one runway remained closed while investigators examined the scene.
The incident became more serious after a DHL cargo aircraft reportedly collided with an unidentified flying object shortly after take-off from Leipzig, forcing the plane to make an unscheduled landing in Hanover. The aircraft sustained minor damage, and authorities are investigating whether the two incidents are connected.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the event as a “new level of danger” and called it a possible hybrid attack, highlighting growing concerns over the use of armed drones against critical infrastructure. Investigators have not identified those responsible, and no country or group has been officially blamed.
