Colombian authorities have significantly increased security across the city of Cali ahead of the presidential inauguration of President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, scheduled for August 7. The inauguration has prompted one of the country’s largest security operations in recent years following recent bomb attacks and ongoing concerns about armed groups operating in southwestern Colombia.
More than 11,000 police officers and military personnel have been deployed across Cali and surrounding areas. Security measures include checkpoints, aerial surveillance, road patrols, and protection of key government buildings and public venues. Authorities say the heightened presence is intended to prevent any disruptions during the ceremony and ensure the safety of residents, visiting dignitaries, and international guests.
The inauguration will break with long-standing tradition by taking place in Cali instead of Bogotá, making it the first presidential swearing-in outside the capital in more than a century. The ceremony is expected to be held at Arena USC, with additional military events planned afterward.
The security operation follows a series of violent incidents in recent weeks, including bomb attacks that injured civilians in the region. Officials have not announced any specific imminent threat but say the enhanced security is a precautionary measure to safeguard one of Colombia’s most important democratic events.
