A five-storey building used as a student paying-guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, triggering a major rescue operation. The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus, was around 40–50 years old, according to police reports. Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Service, police and disaster-response agencies worked through the rubble to locate people who may have been trapped. Reports on Monday put the death toll at six, while several people were rescued and others were injured.
Officials are investigating whether ongoing repair work, unauthorised construction and water accumulation in the basement contributed to the collapse. The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of old buildings being used as student hostels and PG accommodations in densely populated parts of Delhi. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also moved to seal illegal buildings exceeding four floors following the tragedy. Authorities are examining building-safety compliance and considering stronger structural safety measures to prevent similar incidents
