Bengaluru, July 28: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has issued a citywide directive requiring owners of vacant plots to remove all garbage, construction debris, overgrown vegetation, and other waste from their properties by August 15. The move is part of the city’s ambitious “Freedom from Waste” campaign aimed at improving cleanliness, public health, and the overall urban environment.
According to the GBA, vacant plots have increasingly become illegal dumping grounds for household garbage, construction waste, and weeds, creating health hazards and affecting the city’s appearance. Property owners have been instructed to clean their sites and ensure they are properly maintained to prevent further dumping.
Authorities have warned that if owners fail to comply by the deadline, the respective city corporations will undertake the cleanup themselves. The expenses incurred will be recovered from the property owners, with the amount added to their property tax dues under existing waste management regulations. Repeat violations could also attract penalties, with fines reaching up to ₹1 lakh in some cases.
The cleanup drive is expected to continue throughout August with the participation of multiple civic agencies. Besides clearing vacant plots, officials will remove illegal garbage dumps, construction and demolition waste, broken branches, utility obstructions, and other debris from roads and public spaces to improve Bengaluru’s cleanliness and aesthetics.
Officials have also appealed to residents to support the campaign by reporting garbage dumping on vacant plots and cooperating with civic authorities. The initiative is part of a broader effort to create a cleaner, healthier, and more livable Bengaluru while encouraging responsible waste disposal practices across the city.
