THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, September 21, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for six Kerala districts on Monday amid forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds at isolated locations. The alert covered Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur.

The orange alert indicated the possibility of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall within 24 hours in affected areas. The IMD also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by surface winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph at isolated locations.

The warning came after intense rainfall caused several rain-related incidents across the state on Sunday. Landslides, mudslides and flash flooding were reported in parts of Idukki, Kottayam and Malappuram, resulting in deaths and prompting rescue and search operations.

A flash flood in the Kottapuzha River near Nilambur in Malappuram swept away several people, while landslide-related incidents were also reported in Idukki and Kottayam. Authorities continued search and rescue efforts in affected areas.

Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan directed authorities to assess the state’s rain situation on an hourly basis. District administrations in vulnerable areas were asked to take necessary measures, including evacuation where required. SMS weather alerts were also issued in Idukki and Kottayam.

Residents in hilly regions, low-lying areas and locations close to rivers have been advised to remain cautious. Authorities have warned of possible waterlogging, reduced visibility, falling trees and landslides during periods of intense rainfall.

The weather system is expected to continue influencing Kerala during the week. The IMD forecast light to moderate rainfall across the state, with isolated heavy rainfall possible through the coming days.
