KOLLAM, September 17, 2026: Work on 12 railway overbridge projects in the Kollam Lok Sabha constituency is set to be accelerated, with authorities seeking to complete the projects within defined timelines and reduce delays caused by railway level crossings.
The decision followed a high-level meeting involving railway and state government officials. Kollam MP N.K. Premachandran said steps would be taken to speed up construction and address issues that have delayed several projects, including land acquisition and the appointment of implementing agencies.
Several projects are already at different stages. The Eravipuram overbridge has been completed, while piling work for the Polayathodu overbridge has been completed. The Polayathodu project is expected to be completed by May 2027.
Land acquisition is progressing for the Kallumthazham overbridge, while the SN College Junction project is awaiting completion of land acquisition before railway tender procedures can begin. The Mayyanad overbridge has already moved to the tender stage.
Other projects in the package include overbridges at Kottukadu, Ollal, Kundara Pallimukku, Kundara Mukkada, Keralapuram, Chandanathoppe and Elampalloor. Their progress varies, with some awaiting land acquisition, approvals or the appointment of implementing agencies.
The projects are expected to gradually eliminate several level crossings in the constituency, improving road safety and reducing waiting times for motorists and pedestrians. Kerala Rail Development Corporation has been entrusted with several railway overbridge and underbridge projects across the state.
Officials and elected representatives are also expected to pursue faster land acquisition and ensure the necessary funds are made available. A delegation of legislators led by Premachandran is planning discussions with the Chief Minister on these issues.
The accelerated construction of the 12 overbridges is expected to improve connectivity across Kollam while reducing congestion around railway crossings once the projects are completed.
