The results of Rajasthan’s urban local-body elections have produced a significant political development, with the BJP emerging as the largest party across many municipalities. The elections covered hundreds of urban local bodies and more than 10,000 wards.
In Kota Municipal Corporation, the BJP secured 55 of the 100 wards, while Congress won 40 and Independents took three. However, technical problems involving electronic voting machines delayed results in several wards.
The Rajasthan State Election Commission has ordered re-polling at 10 booths in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Suket. Voting at the affected booths is scheduled for September 16, with counting of the re-polled votes expected on September 17.
The EVM problems have attracted attention because the affected votes could influence the outcome in closely contested wards. The election commission said the machines involved were older units and that the number of affected votes exceeded the victory margin in the relevant contests.
The results are being closely watched because they provide an indication of the current political mood in Rajasthan’s urban areas
